Safe driving after changing tyres for the summer

Tyre properly matched to season, vehicle and driver are all investments in the safety of travelers – only then the propulsion characteristics indicated by manufacturers are feasible. In order to facilitate the choice of summer tyre replacement and to educate drivers and mechanics, Polish Tyre Industry Association equipped 5,000 of the largest automotive services in information materials.

It's getting warm, even in the morning the temperature is over 7-10ºC. It's time to put on summer tyres, which from spring to early autumn will provide us with a greater margin of safety in dangerous road situations. With the traffic and diverse driver skills, even the best drivers are not able to predict everything. Good tyres are useful then – we will be able to stop before the obstacle.

On each tyre, the manufacturer places a sequence of digits and characters that describe the individual attributes of the tyre, e.g. 205/55 R16 91T.

Other elements that are on the tyre:

“At the beginning of the season of tyres’ changing, we should remember that the basic knowledge about them and their properties is the ground of an informed choice. It is always a good idea to consult an advisor in the car service, but it is also important for each driver to have individual awareness. We will not improve the safety systems of cars, but assembling good tyres is the easiest way to increase your safety. They transfer the power and strength of the car and brake performance on the road. Their proper selection minimizes the risk for all drivers said Piotr Sarnecki, Director General of Polish Tyre Industry Association.

According to the police, reasons of as many as 21% of all accidents caused by technical malfunction are steering failures and poor tyre conditions. Because they are the only element connecting the car to the road, safe and roadworthy tyres are condition for security.

Summer tyres, especially on dry roads, are characterized by a shorter braking distance – even up to 4-8 meters – and, in addition, have less rolling resistance, making driving more economical. Keep in mind that tyre care also includes pressure control – under-inflating extends the braking distance and speeds up tyres’ consumption. Even the best tyre, when not properly inflated, will not meet our expectations” adds Piotr Sarnecki.
