Efficient transport fleet on brand name tyres
The size of the car fleet used in road transport is estimated to be more than 600,000 vehicles. For each of them tyres are the only part of vehicle in contact with the road and are responsible for transmission and traction. Tyres, mainly because of their rolling resistance, account for up to 30 percent of the fuel consumption of vehicles. The use of branded tyres allows for fuel savings of more than 2 litres per 100 km, that is approximately 5000 litres in a year[1]. Tyres make up only about 3-5 percent of total expenses, but have a bearing on 40 percent of all operating costs. That is why the condition and the quality of tyres affect efficiency of businesses and have an impact on road safety.

PTIA and TLP point out –brand name tyres mean:
It’s worth noting that low-quality tyre for steer axle will last only for about 120-150,000 km, while brand name tyres will cover over 222,000 km. If we take into account the option of retreading, the tyre lifespan can reach up to 450,000 km.
„Reasonable and responsible purchasing policies of fleet and transport companies are immensely important. Such companies should remember that while the purchase of tyres accounts for only about 3-5 percent of expenses, they have a bearing on 40 percent of all operating costs. We should think of buying brand name tyres not in terms of cost, but rather in terms of investment – not only because of the safety of the drivers and other road users. Tyres of this kind reduce fuel consumption and have a greater durability. Thanks to technologies employed in their production and the option of retreading they are more environmentally friendly – says Rafał Spirydon, President of the Board of Polish Tyre Industry Association (PTIA). – „Thanks to deepening of the tyre tread and retreading we can extend the life of our tyres – all of it is made possible by designing tyres to have multiple lives and resistant tyre carcass. No-name tyres are not only a very deceptive saving, but also a potential serious threat to safety, risk of delivery delays and additional costs of fixing the failure” – adds Piotr Sarnecki, Director General of Polish Tyre Industry Association (PTIA).
A tyre, after camshaft and turbine, is the fastest moving element of the vehicle. We should make sure that it’s in good condition. According to ADAC Truck Service’s data, tyre malfunctions account for 30 percent of all mechanical procedures on roads and are the second cause of malfunctions in Germany, the first being electronic shutdowns.
„Apart from reduction of operating costs, every businessman cares about safety in every sense of the word. We care about the well being and good health of our drivers and other road users. Our clients have to be sure that their cargo, often worth hundreds of thousands of Euros, entrusted to the transporter, will arrive undamaged at their destination at the appointed time. The cost of a road tractor coupled to a semi-trailer is almost half a million zloty. This is why we know best that we shouldn’t skimp on safety. Our experience on the roads shows that using good-quality tyres is a worthwhile investment” – says Maciej Wroński, President of the Board of TLP.
