58% of drivers check tyre pressure too rarely[1]
Worse traction, longer braking distance, faster tyre wear and increased risk of tyre burst – these are just some of the consequences of wrong car tyre pressure. Unfortunately, according to a study conducted by Moto Data up to 58% of drivers check tyre pressure too rarely. Meanwhile this parameter has a great impact on the safety and economics of driving. Therefore, we should check tyre pressure at least once a month, especially since the temperature is often low in the morning, thus tyre pressure drops.
It should be noted that there is no optimal pressure value for every tyre of every vehicle. It is the car manufacturer that determines which value is suitable for a certain make of a car or engine version. Therefore we should look for the right pressure values in the car owner’s manual or on the car door’s labels.
“Tyre pressure value is a very important parameter. It is a shame that there are still many drivers who forget about it. Even the best car – with perfect modern systems – might not guarantee safety if we don’t take care of tyres. It is the wheel that provides the sensors with majority of information about the vehicle movement. We appeal to every driver – let’s not forget about monitoring tyre pressure. Checking it at least once a month should be a habit – just like refuelling or refilling windscreen washer” – says Piotr Sarnecki, General Director of the Polish Tyre Industry Association.
„Those drivers whose cars have tire-pressure monitoring system should remain alert – electronics are good as long as it works properly and hasn’t been damaged e.g. by unprofessional tyre service” – he adds.
Even the best tyres won’t work well on the road if they have insufficient air. The tyre tread doesn’t stick to the road with its full width. It makes the braking distance longer, causes noticeable worse road grip as well as faster tyre wear. The correct tyre pressure and the proper tread depth also help to avoid a dangerous phenomenon of aquaplaning, which may occur especially during heavy rains in the autumn. Aquaplaning happens when a layer of water builds between the road surface and the tyre, making the car lose traction and start skidding. Tyres with the right pressure and the recommended tread depth along with the driving speed adjusted to road conditions are all decisive factors in avoiding the risk of aquaplaning.

„Tyre pressure value is a key element determining the way our car reacts on the road – it is particularly crucial while hitting the brakes or taking a turn, when traction is the most important. Pressure that is lower even by 0,5 bar in relation to the value recommended by the manufacturer makes the braking distance up to 4 meters longer. This is the length of a small car. Traction characteristics are also significantly lowered. Let’s not allow any risk on the road – checking pressure takes only a few minutes. If we do it on a regular basis, we will ensure the safety on the road as well as driving comfort and fuel efficiency” – adds Piotr Sarnecki.
